Leonardo Servadio founded ellesse in Perugia, Italy and the company is named after his initials L&S, elle-esse. Leonado Servadio and Franco D’Attoma, Leonardo’s brother-in-law, would make their early business decisions over a game of table tennis, with the winner having their idea chosen. Guillermo Villas rocked ellesse on and off the tennis court in the 80's. The iconic 'five stripe' polo top was made famous by playboy Villas during his much publicised affair with Princess Caroline of Monaco. The ellesse playboy reputation was heightened when John Lloyd wore ellesse in 1983 with the British Tennis team. Playboy Lloyd went onto marry the World Number 1 women's player Chris Evert. 00's - In the early years of the new millennium ellesse teamed up with London based designer duo Eley Kishimoto. The collection received extensive coverage from the likes of Vogue and Elle. When it was revealed at London Fashion Week there was no choice but to bring some Rock n' Roll to the catwalk. Who better to do this than Alexandra and Theodora Richards, the daughters of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. In the mid 80's ellesse collaborated with French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. This was ground breaking stuff as it was the first time a sportswear label and haute couture brand had worked together. As ground breaking facts go the collaboration between Valentino and ellesse in later years is pretty impressive. 10's - ellesse hooked up with Danish brand Wood Wood in 2010 to create a High Summer collection consisting of heritage zip-throughs, stylish sweatshirts, highly branded t-shirts and chino pants all topped off with lightweight pumps. The collaboration captures the Scandinavian Street style roots of Wood Wood mixed with the 80’s British culture of ellesse.
